Speaker: Jolene Johannes, State Farm Insurance, NAIFA MN President

Jolene Johannes is the current NAIFA Minnesota President.  She is a 32 year agent with State Farm Insurance in the small town of Wadena, MN.  Jolene said she always had a feeling that she would be an agent during a major weather event.  She even had a written disaster plan that she had shared with her six member office team. But those plans changed when an EF4 tornado damaged a good portion of Wadena on June 14, 2010.  Jolene learned more in the days, weeks and months following the tornado than she had in all of her years as a State Farm agent.     

With hurricane devastation from Harvey and Irma in the news, Jolene Johannes’ very personal story of being an agent during a catastrophe loss is very timely.   Jolene’s solid advice on how to take care of policyholders following a tornado loss will be eye opening.  Although Jolene’s experience is as a Property and Casualty agent, all insurance professionals will find value in the discoveries she made while working with policyholders who were experiencing major losses.        

Attendees will leave with a better understanding of how to be a great agent for their policy holders after a major catastrophe. The class will cover:

  1. What to expect in the days and months after the event
  2. How to best assist a policy holder who has suffered a major loss
  3. Information about deadlines and coverage restrictions that need to be explained
  4. How to plan ahead before the disaster

The past few years have presented a number of complex industry challenges affecting all stakeholders.  Member firms and advisors have made numerous changes to business models and types of products sold set against a backdrop of increasing and morphing regulatory efforts.  Main Street Americans, on the other hand, have been flooded with information concerning these changes in often confusing and sometimes conflicting terms.  This information–packed–hour program will provide attendees with an update as to key regulatory developments concerning the proposed fiduciary rule, ongoing suitability standard expectations and social media traps and pitfalls.

  1. Understanding the proposed fiduciary rule in its current form and how it may impact your business;
  2. Proper selection of suitable products and recognizing soon-to-be problem accounts; and
  3. Leveraging electronic and other available tools to ethically grow your business while staying inside regulatory lanes.

The Planning BluePrint is a process that identifies areas of opportunity for a client and the advisor.  The BluePrint can be used to uncover current pressing issues, to build trust and expand the relationship between the client and the advisor.  The BluePrint deals with eight areas of financial and life planning: 1) Cash Flow Management, 2) Risk Management, 3) Investment Planning, 4) Estate Planning, 5) Retirement Planning, 6) Income Tax Planning, 7) Legacy Planning, and 8) Business Planning.

The advisor will be introduced to a number of concepts and statistics to help the client understand the nature of the advisor’s work product. 

In addition to a brief discussion of the eight areas above, we will also discuss:

  1. Bureau of Labor Statistics studies,
  2. Financial Rules of Thumb,
  3. Online Personal Financial Centers,
  4. Fundamentals of End of Life Planning, and
  5. The four basic legal documents.

Additionally there will be a discussion about managing the process

12:00-1:00pm 2017 Session: Minnesota State Legislature

Speaker: Dominic Sposeto, NAIFA MN Lobbyist

Dominic Sposeto, NAIFA state lobbyist, will provide an entertaining and information view of the tumultuous 2107 session of the state legislature, and its overtime 4- day special session that left legislative leaders at odds with the governor.  Dominic will discuss the omnibus tax bill which was the center of the ongoing legislative stalemate.   This bill contains several items of interest to financial advisors.  He will also review other insurance legislation enacted during the 2017 session.  Lastly, Dominic will review the status of individual health insurance market and efforts at both the state and federal level to improve the health insurance marketplace.

Jolene Johannes has been an agent with State Farm Insurance in the small town of Wadena for the past 32 years. She is the current president of NAIFA Minnesota (National Association of Insurance & Financial Advisors). She received her Bachelor of Science degree from Minnesota State Moorhead in Mass Communications with an Advertising Concentration. She has also held several other leadership roles: past president of NAIFA Glacial Ridge, past president of Wadena Area Chamber of Commerce, past president and current member of Wadena Rotary, past board chairman and board member of Tri County Health Care in Wadena and a current board member of Kinship, Wadena.

Chris Grgurich is a trial attorney and serves as Lindquist’s General Counsel. Chris tries cases in court and arbitration involving the sale of securities, fraud, breach of contract and fiduciary duty, shareholder disputes and other business litigation matters. He has been counsel to numerous Special Litigation Committees investigating claims of corporate mismanagement. Chris also assists insurance and financial institution clients responding to State, FINRA, SEC and other regulatory inquiries, investigations and enforcement proceedings.
As General Counsel, Chris helps other lawyers meet their professional and ethical obligations and frequently presents at CLEs on such topics. Chris previously served three years on the Hennepin County District Ethics Committee and was appointed to a three year position on the Minnesota Lawyers Professional Responsibility Board, which began February 2016.

Mark Enslin is a trial lawyer representing businesses and individuals in a variety of complex commercial litigation disputes, including those related to securities and financial fraud, contractual disputes, employment disputes, partnership and shareholder disputes, and intellectual property and trade secret issues. He has successfully represented clients in both state and federal court, as well as in arbitrations, and in numerous appeals.

Mark regularly helps businesses and individuals resolve disputes involving fraud and fiduciary-duty claims as well as cases involving shareholder disputes. Mark also has significant experience representing Trustees in bankruptcy claw-back actions as well as representing special litigation committees investigating shareholder derivative claims.

Ed Howat has been a sales trainer and coach for the past 20 years. His primary focus today is coaching financial advisors, internal and external wholesalers, and sales managers. Ed started his career with Northwestern Mutual as a special agent and then moved to sales management as a district agent. After 12 years with Northwestern Mutual, Ed became a financial advisor and was associated with Planners Financial Services, Inc. After two years as a financial advisor, Ed joined Manulife Financial, holding positions as an agency manager, wholesaler and sales training director. He later moved to Nationwide Financial as field sales training manager and worked with wholesalers and sales managers.

Ed believes that it is important for experienced, successful people to mentor the next generation of financial planners by passing on knowledge and skills. Experienced people need to take on the role of “elder” and help people succeed. It is up to those who have enjoyed and prospered from their careers as financial professionals to pass on their wisdom, knowledge, experiences and insights.

Dominic is the president of Dominic Sposeto and Associates, a consulting and lobbying firm he created. The firm provides a broad range of government relations and public affairs services, which include, lobbying, public relations, governmental rule-making advocacy, political action and grassroots legislative strategies. The firm also assists clients in the development and management of their communication, public relations, and political action programs. Dominic has a Master degree in Public Affairs from the University of Iowa and a BA in political science from the same institution. He has been lobbying at the Minnesota capitol for nearly 30 years. Dominic has drafted and developed strategies for passage of over 150 pieces of state legislation. He has worked with various organizations to increase their involvement in legislative and political processes.

CE Credits

You will receive 4 MN Insurance CE credits, for attending the NAIFA-MN Roadshow. You must attend the entire program in order to be eligible to receive any credits. We will also be filing in WI and for CFP credits. Attendees will not receive credits if they do not provide their applicable license numbers on the day of the class. If you need WI Insurance credits, you must provide your National Producer Number. If you need CFP credits, you must provide your CFP ID number.

Credits will be uploaded to individual's Sircon accounts within 10 days of the class date. To check your credits, please log into your Sircon account. If you do not know how to do this, please CLICK HERE for instructions. No certificates will be sent out for this event.


PCI Compliance: Do not email forms with credit card information. To protect your data and to comply with PCI standards, the office will not accept emailed credit card information. In accordance with PCI compliance, NAIFA-MN may not accept any forms via email nor accept credit card information over the phone. All forms must be faxed or mailed in.

Cancellation Policy: Cancellations received by the NAIFA-MN office at least 10 days prior to the day of the event are eligible for a refund of the registration fee, less a $15 administrative fee. No refunds of any kind will be provided for cancellations received after this time. If this date does not work for you, please contact the office and we are happy to move you to another Roadshow, based on availability. There is no fee to move dates, if you cancel at least 10 days prior to the date of the event. The cancellation fee applies if you are cancelling your registration.
