“Kudos to NAIFA for developing such a course! I’ve been involved (both as student and teacher) in Dale Carnegie and various industry designation classes. In my opinion, LILI ranks at the top in helping prioritize what is important in life, and achieving one’s self-determined definition of success.”

-- Michael Standrod, CLU, REBC

LILI: FAQ

Q: What is a Leadership in Life Institute (LILI) class like?

Classes are small (7-14 students), informal and interactive. Each session begins at 8:00 a.m. and ends at 5:00 p.m. The Institute’s core course material is derived from the works of Stephen Covey, Jim Collins, John Maxwell, and Kouzes & Posner.

Q: What can I expect to accomplish?

The coursework is presented in six one-day sessions over a six-month period. You will:

 Create personal vision and mission statements and guiding principles
 Create your business plan
 Explore tools and techniques to improve your practice
 Expand your professional network and form long-lasting bonds with other leaders
 Learn how to increase productivity, efficiency and effectiveness
 Increase self- understanding to realize enhanced interpersonal relationships
 Apply your leadership skills through NAIFA service
 Encounter the very best in leadership and personal development thinking as presented by outstanding leaders
 Learn at a highly accelerated rate while surrounded by highly motivated peers
 Engage in deep introspection and deal with topics such as time management, vision and mission statements, business plans, and ways to create deeper, more meaningful relationships
 Every aspect of your life may be affected by LILI. Each relationship – family, business or social – can be improved by the tools, knowledge and experience gained through participation in the program. As you apply LILI principles, you will grow emotionally, intellectually and professionally. LILI creates a culture – a unique learning environment – that encourages you to bring out the best in yourself, and then apply what you learn across each facet of your life.

Q: What will I be expected to do?

 Attend all six sessions and Graduation. The cost of missing a session is enormous. In the event of an emergency, one session may be missed. No more than one session may be missed, regardless of reason. Attendance at the first and last sessions is required to graduate.
 Contribute to the success of the class through active participation.
 Complete all homework assignments between classes. One person’s lack of preparation will affect everyone.
 The six documents. The written assignments are key elements of the LILI curriculum. Each document is due at different times.
1. Your own "Eulogy"
2. Personal Guiding Principles
3. Personal Vision Statement
4. Personal Mission Statement
5. Business Plan
6. 2-year plan for volunteer service
 Commit to serve as a leader in NAIFA for at least two years.

Q: Will I earn CE (continuing education) credits for taking LILI?
While CE credits are not the main reason one should participate in LILI, graduates may be eligible for them.  Each state determines its own guidelines for granting CE credits and individual states may choose to award credits for completing the course.

State and local association executives working towards their CAE certification must accrue 75 hours of education.  The ASAE (American Society of Association Executives) awards 36 credit hours towards the certification for completing LILI.

Q: What are the eligibility requirements to take LILI?

 NAIFA membership is required: Active member for at least 1 year OR
New member with at least 5 years industry experience OR Associate member (limit 1 per class)
 Aspire to make a positive difference in your life, association and industry
 Be open to self-exploration and personal change
 Pay student tuition
 Attend ALL six one-day Sessions and Graduation
 Fulfill required assignments
 Commit to two years of service as a leader in your association

Where are the classes and how much does it cost?
Class locations and tuition are determined by the sponsor state. Tuition varies by state. Some state and local associations underwrite a portion of the tuition.

The History of LILI

The Leadership in Life Institute (LILI), NAIFA’s signature leadership development course, began in 2000 when the first classes were held in California and Texas. In the years that followed, nearly 260 classes have been completed with 48 states participating. The LILI family has grown to include 2,200 alumni.

The program’s success is highly visible in the leadership ranks of NAIFA as graduates fulfill their service commitment and help LILI meet its mission of developing high-quality leaders for the entire federation.

1998: The Leadership Development Task Force is appointed by 1998-99 NAIFA President Larry Lambert to address the lack of qualified leaders to envision, plan and execute the objectives of the federation. The Task Force, chaired by 2009-10 NAIFA President Tom Curry, begins work on a leadership development curriculum to be administered by NAIFA state associations.

2000: The first LILI classes are held in California and Texas with 14 students graduating.
Bob O’Fallon from Minnesota was in this class!

2002-05: LILI evolves from regional institutes to state-sponsored institutes.

2004: The first LILI 7 Leadership Workshop is held at the NAIFA Conference in Las Vegas.

2006: LILI is held in a majority of states (35) and enrollment increases by more than 60% from the previous year. Nearly 300 students graduate.

2008: LILI introduces award-winning participant guides, the alumni e-newsletter, and new format for the LILI 7 Leadership Workshop at the NAIFA Career Conference.

2009: LILI marks its 10th Anniversary with the launch of LILI Alumni Online, an online networking site designed exclusively for LILI grads.

2010: NAIFA Conference events are expanded to include a new complimentary workshop for alumni – LILI Alumni Networks – where the first edition of the LILI Alumni Playbook is presented.

2011: LILI Alumni Networks on Facebook, an online social networking group reserved for LILI graduates, is launched.

2013: Curriculum is expanded to include The One Page Business Plan®, The Kolb Learning Style Inventory, and Emotional Intelligence (EQ).
