GOP Starts Break with Walz on Shutdown
The bipartisan support for Governor Walz’s call for Minnesotans to stay at home to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus began to unravel this week. The Senate Republican Caucus on Wednesday unveiled an online portal intended to collect stories from Minnesotans that want to “Open Up Minnesota.” Calls by Republicans are growing for Governor Walz to relax his new Executive Order (Executive Order 20-35) issued on Monday that extends the Peacetime Emergency until May 13.
They argue that the number of Minnesotans infected and dying from COVID-19 is much lower than initially projected and the continued shut-down of all businesses is not warranted. Walz’s response is that he doesn’t like the shut-down either, but has a responsibility to protect the health and safety of Minnesotans. Watch for calls to loosen the shutdown to continue and grow in the coming days as many businesses and employees bridle at not being allowed to reopen and return to work.
